Abstract

The most important additional sources of proteins in India are edible oilseed~, oilseed meals nod fish. In view of the acute shortage of milk and other Protein-rich foods of animal origin, there is an urgent need for much larger production and distribution of low cost, balanced.pro. tein supplements for feeding babies, weaned infants and pre-school children. The protein supplements discussed in this paper may be broadly grouped under three heads: (I) High protein foods based on blends of oilseed meals, legumes, skim milk powder and fish flour containing over 40 per cent protein for use as supplements to the diets of pre-school children; (2) Protein-enriched cereal foods and protein_ rich biscuits containing 18 to 26 per cent protein for use as supplements or complete foods for weaned infants; (3) Infant food~ and dried milk substitutes based on soya, peanut and buffalo milk for feeding infants and for the treatment of protein malnutrition in children. A brief account of the technology and the results of studies on the shelf-life, nutritional evaluation, feeding experiments with infants and children and the relative cost of some of the products are presented and discussed. In the production of the different protein foods, locally available raw materials should be used so as to keep the cost down. There is also an urgent need for conducting a systematic programme of extension, consumer acceptance and marketing for popularising these foods among the low income groups of the population.
