Abstract

Fumigation of 2 kg each of Robusta and Arabica coffee beans in 6 replicates at a dose of 3 celphos tablets/t, followed by aeration and desorption was performed. Free PH3 (phosphine) residues in pre- and 1-day aired samples of Robusta and Arabica were determined. Inorganic phosphorus in control and fumigated samples was also determined. Robusta had higher initial free PH3 residues than Arabica. Large amounts of PH3 were desorbed from Robusta during first 8 h. Similar desorption was noticed from Arabica during first 24 h. Both pre- and 1-day aired samples of Robusta had higher computed residues than the corresponding samples of Arabica. Oxidation of PH3 was greater in Robusta than in Arabica. After 29 days, Robusta and Arabica contained no free or computed residues of PH3.
