Abstract

This Dissertation / Report is the outcome of investigation carried out by the creator(s) / author(s) at the department/division of Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore mentioned below in this page.

Item Type: Thesis (Masters)
Additional Information:
In the present study, an attempt was made to see the effect of tamarind seed coat MeOH extract on the growth of B. cereus, E. coli, S. aureus and Y. enterocolitica. It is observed that amongst all the organisms used in this study, S. aureus exhibits maximum susceptibility to tamarind seed coat MeOH extract as compared to others (50% inhibition was obtained at 5000 ppm for B. cereus, 6800 ppm for E. coli, 3000 ppm for S. aureus and 4600 ppm for Y. enterocolitica, respectively). So, it can be concluded that the tamarind seed coat MeOH extract seems to be more effective against gram +ve bacterial strains. The method used for evaluating the antimicrobial activity (Subbalakshmi et al., 1996) uses the exposure of cells to MeOH extract, then the treated cells are released in the fresh media to find the effect on the growth pattern, thus the cells are exposed for a shorter duration to the extract and require higher concentrations of extract for exhibiting their effect. Comparative studies may be performed to evaluate the effect of extract by other methods (like pour plate method) where the cells are in continuous contact of the extract, which is present in the media.
