Abstract

Technical grade Warfarin (99.8%) carried in peanut oil was intragastrically adminiFtered to adult female albino rats (R. norvegicus). Out of five dosages, 1,2,4,8 and 12 mg/kg b. W., none of the rats succumbed to the first dosage, while other doses killed 25.0, 37.5,75.0 and 100% of the test rats respectively between 4-6 days. Those which did not succumb within thit p~riod, gJt over tf}! poisonin~ eff~ct gradualy and the LDso and LD90 values obtained w~re 5.6Z and 10, 11 mg/~g b.w. respectively. Among the survivors, histopathological examinations conducted at the end of 4th week revealed haemorrha~es'in orgaqs like liver, ki;i[u y. ovary, heart and adrenals but no significant changes wer~ cliscernlble in the relative organ weights except for lungs & ovary. The low L050 value and other r<lsults in1iclted that Warfarin apart from its chronic toxicity does possess the potential of a single dose toxicant against rodents. With a concentration of 0.05% in the bait and a restricted baiting period of 3-S days, the problem of tolerance/r~sistance of rodent population to warfarin could be overcome and thus warfarin could still be a useful and effective roden ticide in ,he years to come, if it is judiciously used.
