Abstract

A simple hand operated pulse dehusking machine useful for small scale processors is described. It consists of an emery-coated metal cone fixed to a vertical shaft rotating inside a conical wire mesh screen. The unit is operated by a handle and bevel arrangement, which raises or lowers the cone. A dust cover with a hopper at the top envelops the screen. Another hopper collects the mill stream which comes out through a chute. The husk of bold grains such as Bengal gram and red gram are initially loosened by soaking in water and sun-drying. Winnowing and sieving separates the dhal (cotyledons) from the husk. The yield of dhal is 75-80% from both Bengal gram and red gram.
