Abstract

Several cultures of Streptomyces fradiae SCF5 maintained at room temp. (30-35 degree C) lost their ability to produce glucose isomerase. Attempts to improve S. fradiae SCF5 strain, for enzyme production, failed after various mutagenic treatments. UV irradiation gave sporulating as well as partially and completely bald colony variants producing reduced quantities of glucose isomerase, and some completely lacking it. Further experimentation with chemical mutagens, mitomycin-C, acriflavine and ethyl methanesulphonate also resulted in decreased enzyme and aerial mycelium producing characteristics.
