Abstract
The contents of lysine, methionine, cystine, threonine, tryptophan, and protein (N x 6.25) were determined in uninfested and infested samples of maize and cowpea [see preceding abstr.] Infestation significantly decreased the threonine content of maize (2.9 vs. 3.5 g/16 g N in uninfested controls), and the content of lysine (6.8 vs. 7.4) and threonine (3.1 vs. 3.5) in cowpea. These decreases may not fully account for the significant reduction in protein efficiency ratio (as measured in rat growth trials) of infested maize diets (1.16 vs. 1.49 for uninfested maize diets) and infested cowpea diets (1.47 vs. 2.22) fed at 8% protein levels in the diet.
