Abstract
Infant milk formulae with 0.5-1.0% or without lactulose [a bifidus growth factor] were fed to weanling rats for 5 wk to assess effect of bifidobacteria on intestinal adsorption of certain nutrients. No significant differences in absorption and retention of N, C, P and Fe were observed among any of the formulae. Absorption and retention of N (>85%) and P (>95%) were high compared to those for C and Fe (56-77%). Results further indicated that bifidobacteria had no effect on absorption and retention of nutrients from the formulae. Incorporation of lactulose did not affect growth, blood composition or histopathology of liver, indicating that it had no adverse effects on continuous consumption by rats during their growth period.
