Abstract
200 mutton carcasses from Mysore city slaughterhouse (MCSH) 100 from retail shops (RS) and 100 from a modern abattoir (MA) situated at CFTRI were examined for Salmonella. 9% of carcasses from MCSH and 8% from RS showed the presence of Salmonella, but none was detected in MA samples. Chopping blocks, knives and the rectal swabs from animals in slaughterhouses were contaminated with Salmonella. The serotypes isolated included S. gaminaru, S. adelaide, S. virchow, S. newport, and S. paratyphi B. These were tested on mice, rabbits and guinea pigs and the extent of virulence was determined. The results indicate that Salmonella was more virulent to mice than to rabbits or guinea pigs.
