Abstract
Numerous experiments are described, in which various foodstuffs e.g. fruit and vegetable products (juices, pulps, jams, segments, slices), milk powder, fish, were packed in unit or bulk containers and examined for quality as affected by internal corrosion etc. Containers were hot dipped tinplate, differential tinplate, electrolytic tinplate and tin-free steel (chromium-chromium oxide-coated steel) cans, flexible laminate pouches, and lacquered Al collapsible tube units and bulk rigid high-density polyethylene. Results are presented in tables and graphs and include: hot dipped and electrolytic tinplate were suitable for canning some fruit and vegetable products; causes of corrosion with tinplate in combination with some products were identified and several remedial measures suggested; initial results on bulk packaging of fruit pulps/juices were encouraging. Future scope for development of packaging materials is indicated.
