Abstract

Attempt has been made to select and breed rice (Oryza sativa Linn.) var. possessing low shedding and high crack resistance. Low shedding var. 'Madhu' and high crack resistant var. 'IR 20' and 'Pushpa' were selected. These bred true to their respective characteristics in the successive 2-3 generations. Such var. with low or optimum shedding and high crack resistance would reduce quantitative and qualitative losses, especially when harvesting is delayed, and would also have low milling breakage.
