Abstract

The use and efficiency of 2 quick routine methods, (i) recommended by the American Public Health Association [see Recommended methods for the microbiological examination of foods (1958) p. 155, American Public Health Association Inc., New York] and (ii) described by Thatcher & Clarke [see Microorganisms in foods, their significance and methods of enumeration (1968) p. 92, University of Toronto Press, Canada; FSTA (1971) 3 2B14], both with slight modifications, are described for revealing the presence of Salmonella from sheep and goat carcasses sold in Indian markets. A total of 41 isolates were obtained from 45 carcasses, of which only 3 isolates were confirmed as Salmonella bareilly; others were Aerobacter aerogenes (5), Aerobacter cloacae (20), Proteus (2), Citrobacter freundii (9), Aerobacter sp. (1) and unidentified (1).
