This comprehensive review covers the following aspects: history and origin, principal var., botany, production and yield of mangoes; physiology of fruit growth and development (morphology, compositional changes, respiration during growth, maturity indices, harvesting and ripening); physiology of ripening (respiration, enzymes, inhibitors, ethylene, and chemical constituents); storage and transport (storage diseases, postharvest treatments, packaging, and transport); economic aspects (world trade, sensory properties, processing quality, nutritional significance, and waste utilization); and research needs.
