Abstract

Conditions for using thiram as an antifungal agent during storage of grain sorghum have been standardized. It was found that sorghum (15% moisture content) can be protected from fungal infection for 180 and 30 days at 80 and 90% RH respectively, when treated with a spray containing 4 g thiram/l. Thiram was not effective against some toxigenic storage fungi such as Aspergillus flavus, Asp. candidus and Asp. ochraceus. These organisms constituted greater than 50% of the total number of colonies isolated from sorghum. The rate of hydrolytic degradation of thiram was faster at higher moisture levels. Moisture content of 15-16% in sorghum appears to be a safe level for use of thiram during storage; above this moisture level thiram becomes ineffective against fungal infection.
