Abstract

Eggs from 6 lots of pullets fed a basal diet plus 3 000 units of provitamin A from alfalfa (lots 1-4) or 3000 units stabilized vitamin A (lots 5 and 6) supplemented with 0 to 100 g furazolidone/ton feed, were studied for production, egg wt., yolk wt., shell wt., % yolk, % shell, and Haugh units. Feed efficiency and mortality, and existence of blood spots and streaks were observed. It was found that 3 000 IU of either provitamin A or stabilized Vitamin A supported satisfactory egg production, though pullets receiving the provitamin A had a 7.88% higher production. Increasing levels of furazolidone reduced egg wt., yolk wt. and shell wt.; egg production increased with stabilized vitamin A but decreased with provitamin A. Haugh unit scores increased and feed conversion decreased on supplementation of provitamin A feeds with furazolidone. Neither the source of vitamin A nor the drug had any effect on mortality. A highly significant increase in liver storage of vitamin A occurred in groups fed stabilized vitamin A over those fed provitamin A; level of furazolidone did not have any effect.
