Abstract
In the first part of this review the following topics are discussed: characteristics of allergic reactions, allergens and reagins; clinical symptoms of food allergy; and detection of food allergy by various methods e.g. skin testing, X-rays, leukopenic index, pulse acceleration tests, elimination and provocative diets. In the second part evidence of the allergenic nature of specific foods is presented, covering milk, eggs, fish, meat, cereals, legumes (soya beans, peanuts), edible fungi, fats and oils, fruit and vegetables, beverages and food contaminants (e.g. preservatives, insecticides, insect excreta and fragments).
