Abstract

The housefly is relatively unaffected by interfering substances in chlorinated hydrocarbon extracts, and is useful for bioassay of pesticides. A sample of a 50% emulsifiable concentrate of malathion is diluted and sprayed onto sacks (8 in x 10 in) at the rate of 14 mg/ft-2. Treated bags are stored at 26-28 degree C and 68-80% RH. 3-8 bags are removed at weekly intervals for assay of malathion residues using 20 female flies; the effectiveness of the pesticide assessed in terms of mortality rate. Chemical determinations are made at the same time. Bioassay values are slightly higher than chemoassay values which showed that approximate equal to50% of the initial application remained after 4 wk. Results are discussed with reference to field trials.
