Abstract
An overview of the gherkin industry in India is provided. Aspects of gherkins considered include: product descriptions of semi-finished/processed or bulk packs (manufactured by natural/controlled fermentation or acidulation) and finished or consumer packs (cured type, fresh packs, refrigerated); world and Indian markets; major processing/export companies and advantages of the Indian industry, as well as problems faced; cultivation and grading; financial benefits of cultivation to farmers and benefits of contract farming; processing; major quality issues associated with farming practices, post harvest stages and processing; exports from India; and establishment of an Agri Export Zone for gherkins in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, its anticipated benefits and strategies developed to deal with challenges faced.
