Abstract

A series of gellan/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite cast films of 90-100 mum was prepared by varying gellan content from 33 to 100%, using water as solvent and glycerol as plasticizer. Homopolymer films were also prepared. Films were characterized for thermal properties, intermolecular interactions and mechanical properties. DSC thermograms showed single glass transitions for blended films and melt isotherms shifted towards higher temp. as level of PVA in blends increased. A shift in major signals of IR for OH absorption and varied intensities in FTIR spectra indicated molecular interaction and cross-linking of polymers. Blended films exhibited tensile strength values of 3.5-5.6 MPa and tear strength values of 15-30 g. Percentage elongation at breakage was highest in 1:3 blends of gellan:PVA.
