Abstract

To investigate the use of coconuts in the prevention of colorectal cancer, effects of consuming dietary fibre derived from coconut flesh on antioxidant status were studied in a rat animal model treated with the colon-specific carcinogen 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH). Diets based on a neutral detergent fibre isolated from coconuts or corn starch (control) were fed to rats; a subgroup of each dietary group were injected weekly with DMH. Levels of free fatty acids, TBA reducing substances, conjugated dienes, hydroperoxides, glutathione, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase activities, were measured at wk 15 and 30, in the liver, intestine, proximal colon and distal colon. DMH-induced reduction in lipid peroxides and free fatty acids observed in rats fed the control diet was prevented by the fibre diet. Fibre-fed rats also showed increased SOD and catalase activities and decreased glutathione levels in all tissues studied. It is suggested that the loss of oxidative capacity associated with DMH administration to rats can be prevented by feeding fibre isolated from coconut flesh.
