Abstract

An anthocyanin-producing cell callus culture of carrot (Daucus carota) was subjected to elicitors and various abiotic stresses in an attempt to improve pigment synthesis. Elicitors tested included culture filtrates and cell extracts from 4 yeasts and 4 bacteria. Abiotic stress was induced using salts of metal ions. Increases in pigment formation of 100, 72, 49, 45, and 41% were induced after treatment with cell extracts of Rhodotorula rubra, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. Salts of calcium, manganese, zinc, cobalt, iron and vanadium all enhanced pigment production. Calcium salts were the most effective of all the salts tested; pigment levels increased by approx. 100% compared to a level of 16 mg/100 mg dry. wt. in control cells.
