Abstract
[Tomato processing wastes (TPW) are generated in significant quantities by tomato processing industries. Their bioremediation treatment for the production of methane provides a potentially economic use for this waste material and reduces pollution problems. Anaerobic digestion of TPW for methane was investigated.] The influence of hydraulic retention time (HRT), loading rate and temp. on the productivity (v/v/day) and yields (m3/kg volatile solids) of total gas and methane during anaerobic digestion of TPW was studied. High yields of total gas (0.7 m 3) and methane (0.42 m 3/kg) were obtained at 24 days HRT and 4.5 kg m-3 loading rate and 35C. Loading rates of 6.0-7.5 kg TS m-3 and temp. of 25 and 30C were critical for methanogenesis at 16 days HRT. Stable digestion was achieved up to 40C, but 45C was unfavourable for methanogenesis.
