Abstract

Three species of fungi and several kinds of bacteria were isolated from surface-sterilized larvae, pupae and adults of the anthribid Araecerus fasciculatus reared on maize grain in the laboratory. Aspergillus ruber was the predominant storage fungus, and among the bacteria, cocci were more abundant in the immature stages and gram-positive sporulating bacilli in adults. Due to nutritional supplementation, breeding of the anthribid in stored products was increased by the presence of A. ruber. Given a free choice, the anthribid preferred food containing A. ruber to that containing other storage fungi. A. ochraceus did not support multiplication of the pest.
