Abstract

The relative toxicity of the entomopathogenic bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki produced in submerged culture, surface culture using modified tryptone medium or in vivo using 3rd-instar larvae of Bombyx mori was evaluated against 3rd-instar larvae of B. mori. The submerged culture method was the most effective, producing 272.5 X 103 toxicity units, followed by the surface culture and in vivo methods, which produced 121.6 X 103/litre medium and 9.1 X 103 toxicity units/kg medium, respectively. Higher biomass and unfavourable conditions resulted in the in vivo method having the lowest production (5 X 109/g) of spore crystals. The surface culture method had the highest production (62 X 109/g). Products from submerged and surface cultures were 29.9 and 13.4 times as potent as those from the in vivo method.
