Abstract

An account is given of studies in India to develop a simple gas-proof unit pack of ethylene dibromide suitable for use to control insects in individual sacks of grain or small containers. Such a pack would simplify fumigation procedures in households and on farms. The most satisfactory one consisted of a piece of straw-board (4 X 4 X 0.4 cm) that had been soaked to saturation in ethylene dibromide and sealed in an inner pouch of Polycel (cellulose film with a polyethylene laminate) and an outer pouch of gum paper that had been treated with formaldehyde. The shelf-life of the pack was 200 days at a room temperature of about 25 deg C. Accelerated tests showed that at 40 deg C, the weight loss of the fumigant was only 10% in 127 days. Promising results were obtained in small-scale fumigation tests with household containers. The straw-board squares had reached saturation in 44 h and the amount of ethylene dibromide absorbed by each was approximately 7 g. This quantity is adequate to treat 140 litres (or more than 100 kg) grain at the dose of about 50 mg ethylene dibromide/litre grain. This dose gave good control of Tribolium castaneum (Host.). It was found that both the position of the pack in the container and the material from which the container was made were important for the volatilisation and dispersal of the fumigant. Cardboard cartons and gunny bags enclosed in polyethylene sheet required a more even distribution of the packs than was necessary in metal containers.
