Abstract

To compare the effectiveness of various chemical insecticides for the protection of stored grain from insect attack, adults of Tribolium castaneum (Hbst.), Sitophilus oryzae (L.) and Callosobruchus chinensis (L.) (Bruchus chinensis) were exposed to dried deposits and mortality was recorded after 24 h. Fenitrothion was more toxic than malathion to all 3 species, the LD50 in mu g/petri dish (10 cm diameter) being 0.575-0.955, 0.323-0.436 and 1.5-2.95, respectively, for fenitrothion and 1.641-2.291, 1.318-1.738 and 1.75-3.8, respectively for malathion. Diazinon was more toxic than fenitrothion or malathion to S. oryzae (LD50 0.218-0.302) and C. chinensis (LD50 0.9-1.88). gamma -BHC (lindane) was consistently the least toxic. The susceptibility of the adult beetles increased as they aged.
