Abstract

The authors investigated the gas permeability of 28 types of plastic film and coated fabric manufactured in India that were thought suitable for use as gas-proof sheets for fumigation operations. The testing technique is described and the results obtained with methyl bromide and phosphine gas as the fumigants are given in a table. Unsupported polyvinylchloride (PVC) film (1000 gauge) showed the best retention, followed by fabrics coated with PVC or rubber. In general, the PVC-coated fabrics retained methyl bromide better than did the rubberised fabrics, but with phosphine there was no difference.
