Abstract

Weanling rats were deprived of vitamin A (NAR 35, 5610) and were killed after different periods of deficiency were reached. Erythrocyte membrane proteins were solubilized and subjected to sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The rate of efflux of sulphate labelled with 35S and the retention of sulphate in the erythrocytes were studied. There was a significant reduction of 20 to 27% in only one of the glycoproteins of the membrane. Sulphate ion was retained by erythrocytes from rats deprived of vitamin A.
