Abstract

Male weanling Wistar rats deprived of vitamin A had a decreased proportion of arylsulphatases A and B in the soluble postgranular supernatant (PGS) fraction of leucocytes. Total mucopolysaccharide content of subcellular fractions of leucocytes was not changed. One of the 2 mucopolysaccharide components in the soluble PGS fraction in normal leucocytes was not detectable in leucocytes of rats deprived of vitamin A. In 7 children with marasmus, who had xerosis of the conjunctiva or Bitot's spots, arylsulphatase A activity in leucocytes was increased whereas in 6 marasmic children without vitamin A deficiency arylsulphatase B activity was decreased.
