Additional Information: A seed is a complex structure containing all the components necessary to nourish a small plant till it can grow leaves and roots to continue its survival. All the components of an oilseed have yet not been identified by scientists. Here in this project, we will study the components of an oilseed and their value as nutrition for humans and as an effective bio diesel. Our study primarily focuses on the different methods of extraction of oil from oilseeds. The methods studied so far are, solvent extraction (using the Soxhlet Extraction System), Hydraulic Press and Supercritical fluid extraction. Using supercritical carbon dioxide medium for extraction is a novel and highly sophisticated method. It is now finding its use even in extraction of petroleum and diesel. Scientists are looking to reduce greenhouse effect by trapping supercritical carbon dioxide in porous barren oil fields. In our project, we have worked with different samples of sesame seeds, Rice Bran and Dry Coconut. Our aim has been to study and compare the percentage and Physico-chemical properties of the oil of these samples extracted by the various methods.
