Additional Information: Whenever food is placed in contact with another substance, there is a risk that chemicals from the contact material may migrate into the food. These chemicals may be harmful if ingested in large quantities, or impart a taint or odour to the food, negatively affecting food quality. Food packaging is the most obvious example of a food contact material. For regulating the use of plastics in food packaging, many countries have formulated standards and codes for the manufacture of plastic materials in contact with food stuff. In Ideally, extraction tests for transfer into foods should be conducted with each type of food under the normal conditions in which they are stored. However, this apart from being economically constrained is extremely tough due to the complex nature of foods. This is simplified by using simulants for different types of food. 4 It is required to compare the overall migration value and nature of additives among various simulants, plastics as well as different testing conditions under various regulatory standards. After performing tests under EEC and USFDA conditions for room and higher temperature cases it was found that the USFDA condition needs to be modified as it shows a lower migration value for the room temperature condition. It was also found that 100 degrees|2 hours could replace the 40 degrees|10 days condition of room temperature making it less-time consuming. From IR data it was found that the water, alcohol and fat simulants extract different compounds from the same material. Also, Heptane and Iso-octane (both fat simulants) extract the same compounds but Iso-octane more in amount than heptane making it more viable for usage. Finally, the compound Irganox (an anti-oxidant) was identified from the extractives of LDPE, HDPE and PP and the compound Di-ethyl Pthalate was identified from the additives of PVC.
