Abstract

This Dissertation / Report is the outcome of investigation carried out by the creator(s) / author(s) at the department/division of Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore mentioned below in this page.

Item Type: Student Project Report
Additional Information: Annatto pigment is a natural pigment produced in aril portion of Bixa orellana L. and it is the most sought after natural food colorant having wide applications in food industry apart from its moderate use in pharmaceutical and also as a cosmeceutical. Annatto pigment stands next to saffron in natural color economics and as per usage stood next to caramel. The main important content of the annatto pigment is Bixin (~89%) which is an apocarotenoid found on the aril portion of the seeds of Bixa orellana L. In order to get good price internationally for annatto and for industrial utilization more than 2.5% of bixin content is essential as per international bench mark. Unfortunately the bixin levels in Indian cultivars of Bixa orellana L. is in the range of 1.5 to 2%. Elicitor mediated technology would be helpful in augmenting annatto pigment content in in vitro normal root cultures of Bixa. It is an alternative method of producing annatto pigment. This will be helpful for studying molecular mechanism in Bixa. By biotic elicitor applications to the normal root cultures in vitro was able to improve the total color content by 1-2 folds in in vitro normal root cultures of Bixa. This approach would be having implications in improving the annatto pigment levels significantly in an eco friendly manner and is cost effective. In normal root cultures annatto pigment production is less compared to in seeds of Bixa but it is an alternate way to produce annatto pigment because Bixa flowering is once a season.
