Abstract
Different sterilizing treatments viz. hot hydrogen peroxide, boiling aqueous solution of 2% citric acid and 1% acetic acid, absolute alcohol, sterile saline washes, gamma ray irradiation were studied for their effectiveness in sterilization of aluminium foil laminated plastic pouches. Treatments with hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, gamma irradiation, aqueous acetic-citric acid solution are almost equally effective in pouch sterilization. Each successive rinsing with sterile saline further removes surface microflora from pouches considerably, probably by washing action. Treatment with boiling aqueous solution of 2% citric acid and 1% acetic acid, both being natural organic acids, will have a good potential in package sterilization.
