Abstract
Fruits and seeds of Emblica officinalis were investigated to evaluate their antioxidant activity. The free radical scavenging potential of the methanolic, ethanolic, water and pure juice extracts of Emblica officinalis was studied for its scavenging activity by different methods viz. DPPH radical scavenging, nitric oxide scavenging activity and total antioxidant capacity. The percentage scavenging and IC50 values were calculated. The result indicated that the fresh juice has the best activity with IC50 value of 1.78μg/ml for DPPH and total antioxidant with concentration of 342.703μg/mg dry weight respectively. Wherein nitric oxide scavenging activity was best seen in whole fruits when compares to fresh juice with IC50 value of 6μg/ml. The pure juice showed the highest LDL oxidation prevention capacity and high ascorbic acid content of 327.216 g compared to all other extracts. The measurement of total phenolic content by Folin-Ciocalteus reagent indicated that pure juice has highest phenolic content of 13.98μg/mg dry weight. In total flavonoids assay, seed extract has highest flavonoid content of 71.28 μg quercetin/mg dry weight and 0.0230 μg rutin/mg dry weight while whole fruit methanol showed highest carotenoid content of 0.38384 μg /mg dry wt. The highest tannin content of 61.78 μg /mg dry wt was found in whole fruit ethanol. The activity of the fresh juice could be partially due to ascorbic acid and total phenolic content. The HPLC profile of the whole fruits showed high amount of Gallic acid of 8141.157mg/100g.
