Abstract

This Dissertation / Report is the outcome of investigation carried out by the creator(s) / author(s) at the department/division of Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore mentioned below in this page.

Item Type: Student Project Report
Additional Information: Genes responsible for the degradation of 4-CBA i.e. 4- CBA dehalogenase for the breakdown of ring structure i.e. dioxygenase were isolated by PCR and cloned into E. coli DH 5 α. Microorganisms play a vital role in the environmental fate of pesticides and other xenobiotics. These could be completely detoxified and mineralized. The undesirable role of microorganisms was controlled by using alternative pesticides and manipulation of the properties of the microorganisms. However, the environmental matrices in which pesticides and microorganisms interact are very complex which makes prediction of the outcome difficult. More understanding is required to improve the accurate prediction of the environmental fate of pesticides. In order to reduce the problem of enhanced degradation of pesticides in soil, the rotation of crops and of pesticides is recommended. These approaches may lead to the reduced use of pesticides.Genetically modified microorganisms can provide improved activity which should prove useful in large-scale applications of microbial degradation to environmental problems. However, it is essential that such microorganisms are thoroughly evaluated for safety before release into the environment. Microbial dehalogenases are involved in the biodegradation of many important chlorinated pollutants. Dehalogenases acts on halogenated aliphatic compounds, which are industrially applied on a large scale as solvents, as intermediates in the production of plastics and as insecticides. They cause severe problems due to their toxicity as well as their persistence in the environment.
