Abstract
Biopolymers are emerging as promising alternatives to conventional food packaging materials due to growing concerns over environmental pollution caused by synthetic plastics. In this study, nanocomposite films were developed using pectin and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) incorporated with copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) biosynthesized through a green method using Aloe Vera leaf extract. The effect of varying concentrations of biosynthesized CuNPs (25 mg to 100 mg) on the optical, structural, and barrier properties of the films was investigated. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis confirmed the interaction between CuNPs and the Pectin/HPMC matrix. The incorporation of CuNPs resulted in reduced water vapor permeability, along with modifications in moisture content. Additionally, the films exhibited enhanced antioxidant activity with increasing nanoparticle concentration. Overall, the inclusion of biosynthesized copper nanoparticles significantly improved the functional properties of Pectin/HPMC films, making them suitable for potential applications in sustainable food packaging
