Abstract

Effects of modified atmosphere packaging coupled with wax coatings on the storage life of avocados were studied using cv. Fuerte fruits stored at different temp. (2, 8 and 27C). Avocados given a wax emulsion (6%) dip treatment and packed in LDPE bags (250 gauge) remained green, firm and in good condition for about 4-5 wk at 8 2C. These fruits also did not develop chilling injury. Avocados without wax and packaging treatments became soft, developed internal browning and became inedible within 3 days at room temp. (27 2C). At 2 2C, avocados developed chilling injury, pitting of the skin and were rejected after 9 days of storage.
