Abstract

4 var. of apples (i) Royal Delicious, (ii) Richa-red, (iii) Red Delicious and (iv) Golden Delicious, were graded, packed in wooden cases, and transported by lorry from Thandehar in Simla district (N. India) to Bangalore. They were cold stored (32-34 degree F, RH 85-90%). Fruits were observed every month for 5 months for physiological loss in wt. (PLW), and % shrivelled and spoiled apples. When the % shrivelling was greater than 25%, apples were sold by retail sale. Rate of shrivelling was lower for large apples than for small apples. (i) was more prone to shrivelling than the other var. and shrivelling exceeded 25% after 2 months storage. Apples from different orchards also differed in the extent of shrivelling. The PLW was the same for different sizes; but the symptoms appeared first in smaller fruit. Var. difference in PLW was not observed. There was little fungal spoilage (1.6-5.4%) during 4 months storage. Spoilage was greater for Richa-Red and Red Delicious var. and for larger than for smaller apples. It was concluded that it was uneconomic to store the smaller sized apples greater than 2 months and larger apples greater than 3 months.
