Abstract

Red Delicious apples of optimal stage of maturity (assessed by the starch-iodine method) were collected in 1974-1976 seasons, and packed in conventional wooden cases using the cell packing system. Cases were transported by (i) truck/train for 10-14 days, or (ii) jeep/train/air for 2-4 days, to a storage depot. In the depot fruit were kept at 32-34 degree F/80-85% RH for up to 9.5 months, and examined during storage for % spoilage by fungal attack and/or shrivelling and sensory quality (texture, juiciness, aroma, taste, by a 20-member trained panel). Results are tabulated. In (i) storage life was 3-5 months vs. 7.5 months in (ii).
