Abstract

Microscopic examination for presence of beef tallow, lard and hydrogenated fat was found to be a preliminary and rough screening test for detection of animal fat in vanaspati. However, if there is the slightest possibility of presence of traces of animal fat in vanaspati, reverse phase TLC in kieselguhr-G or GLC of fatty acid methyl esters is recommended on the basis of experimental studies.
