Abstract

Petroleum ether extractives (PEE) of 9 plant species: (i) Carum roxburghianum Benth. & Hook, (ii) Saussurea lappa Clarke. (iii) Embelia ribes Burm., (iv) Withania somnifera Dunal, (v) Psoralea corylifolia Linn., (vi) Clerodendron inerme (Linn.) Gaertn., (vii) Cestrum nocturnum Linn., (viii) Caesalpinia bonduc (Linn.) Roxb. and rice bran oil have been tested against Callosobruchus chinensis Linn. infesting green gram, Phaseolus mungo Linn. PEE of (i) at 0.1% level, rice bran oil at 0.2 and 0.5% levels and (v) at 0.5% level, gave almost complete protection of the pulse up to 135 days, while (ii) and (iv) at 0.1% and (iii) at 0.5% protected up to 90 days. However, (viii), (vii) and (vi) comparatively were less effective against the bruchid attack. The germination test showed that the treatments did not have any adverse effect on seed viability.
