Abstract
Safflower seed (Carthamus tinctorius) (5 var. representing 4 cv.) (i) Manjira, (ii) Annigeri-S, (iii) Annigeri-S-144, (iv) Nag-7 and (v) Tara were collected from 3 regions of India, and analysed for their oil characteristics. Values were: B refractive index, 62.5-64.5 at 40 degree C; free fatty acids content, 0.15-1.09% as oleic acid; I value, 136.6-146.0 (Wij's method); and saponification value 186.0-195.9. These values were within the limits prescribed under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, India.
