Abstract

Effect of the substance on toxicity of pure p, p'-DDT to houseflies (Musca domestic nebulo) were investigated. 100 g samples of fresh tomato or potato were macerated; 30 mug DDT/g macerate was added, and mixed for h. Samples of DDT-treated macerate were centrifuged at 2000 rev/min for 5-10 min, and the supernatant was collected. 2 ml aliquots of DDT-treated (i) macerate and (ii) supernatant were deposited on paper towel strips; further 2 ml aliquots of DDT-treated (ii) were deposited on glass strips, to assess the effect of absorption of DDT on paper. Control samples consisted of pure DDT in acetone, or DDT-free (i) and (ii), deposited on paper towel or glass strips. The strips were then dried, and placed in 25 x 200 mm test tubes, stoppered with cotton. Batches of twenty 3-5 day old female flies were then placed in the tubes, and the number dead after 24 h determined; each trial was replicated 3 times, and mean values determined. LD50 values were calculated, and regression lines between probit kill and log. deposit of test material were determined; results are given. LD50 was higher for DDT-treated (i) and (ii) than for pure DDT; (i) had higher LD50 values than (ii). LD50 with DDT-treated (ii) was higher on paper towel than on glass. These differences are due to the masking effect of plant tissues, and absorption of ddt on paer towel. It was concluded that the method is suitable for evaluation of the toxicity of insecticides in the presence of foods; application of samples to paper towels prevents damage to the insects by excess moisture.
