Lack of antidiabetic influence of cumin (Cuminum cyminum) seeds and bitter gourd (Momordica charantia) juice in rats.

Hypoglycaemic activity of cumin seed and bitter gourd was investigated in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. When consumed as a single oral dose (1 g/kg body wt.), cumin did not exert any beneficial hypoglycaemic effect. Similarly, consumption of fresh juice of the bitter gourd as a single oral dose (equivalent to 6.5 g fresh fruit/kg body wt.) did not exert any beneficial hypoglycaemic activity in experimental rats.
