Abstract

Treatment of soil with alpha-HCH resulted in a 3-fold increase in the numbers of flagellate protozoa and a 5-fold increase in the number of ciliate protozoa found in the soil. A frequently encountered ciliate was identified as Tetrahymena pyriformis m strain. In monoculture studies with this species, treatment with alpha-HCH up to 10 p.p.m. and beta-HCH up to 15 p.p.m. stimulated cell multiplication. More than 20 p.p.m. of either compound killed the cells.
