Abstract
The infestation of stored coffee, cocoa and cardamom by arthropod pests in India is reviewed in a paper presented at a workshop on insect pest management strategies in coffee, cardamom and tea cropping systems held in India in 1986. The anthribid Araecerus fasciculatus is a pest of stored coffee beans whose activity increases with relative humidity. At 50% RH A. fasciculatus did not breed and the generation time was 50-60 and 35 days at 75-80 and 85-90% RH, respectively. Control can be achieved by fumigation with Durofume (a mixture of EDB [ethylene dibromide] and MB [methyl bromide]). The pyralid Cadra cautella [Ephestia cautella] and the anobiid Lasioderma serricorne are major pests of stored cocoa beans. The anobiid Stegobium paniceum damages stored cardamom causing 25-30% loss of essential oil. Fumigation with sulfur dioxide provides control but does not prevent reinfestation, and methyl bromide and phosphine (aluminium phosphide) can also be used for control.
