Abstract
A bioassay method to determine concentrations of methyl bromide used for fumigation is described and a straight-line graph is presented for use as a ready-reckoner for concentrations in mg/litre based on observed knockdown times. A 20-ml glass syringe containing 30 adults of Sitophilus oryzae (L.) 2-3 weeks old was the 'gas-analyser' and a gas sample was withdrawn into the syringe and plugged. The time required for 100% knockdown was noted and the concentrations associated with this exposure time were read from the graph. Concentrations between 8 and 80 mg/litre were investigated.
