Abstract

Papier mache strips impregnated with 1500-2000 mg dichlorvos were tested in a warehouse for the control of pests of stored products. The strips were hung 8-10 ft apart at a height of 7-8 ft at a rate of 1 strip/1000 ft3, and it was found that the concentration of vapour in the atmosphere 1, 5, 8, 15, 21 and 30 days after treatment had begun averaged 28.0, 23.7, 18.0, 8.3, 6.3 and 2.4 mu g/litre, respectively. When adults of Tribolium castaneum (Hbst.), Sitophilus oryzae (L.), Stegobium paniceum (L.), and Callosobruchus (Bruchus) chinensis (L.) and larvae of Trogoderma granarium Everts were suspended in cages at various intervals, all the test insects were killed 5 days after the beginning of treatment and 95-100% 8 days after it. Heavy natural infestation by Tribolium castaneum, S. paniceum, Sitophilus oryzae and Ephestia cautella (Wlk.) in bags of cereals and pulses were reduced to very low levels in 22 days.
