Abstract

For 6 weeks groups of 36 female rats weighing 40 to 45 g were given diets with 7 (LP) and 17% (NP) protein. After 6 weeks, mean body weight for NP and LP rats was 133 and 80 g. Technical X-factor (a byproduct obtained during separation of lindane from technical benzene hexachloride) was given by stomach tube to rats given NP diet at 2, 3, 4 and 6.75 g/kg body weight and to rats given LP diet at 0.4, 0.6, 0.89 and 1.33 g/kg body weight. For rats given NP and LP diets LD50 of technical X-factor was 5.111 and 0.784 g/kg body weight, respectively. In a further trial male rats had free access for 90 days to LP or NP diets containing technical X-factor 25 or 1500 mug/g. Only rats given LP diet developed signs of X-factor poisoning and with X-factor 1500 mug/g mortality rate was 33.3%. Rats given LP diet and X-factor 1500 mug/g showed more hyptrophy of liver and testis than did those given other treatments. Activities of serum and liver transaminases and glucose-6-phosphatase in rats given LP and NP diets with X-factor 1500 mug/g were significantly different from control values.
