Abstract

Male Wistar rats weighing 120 to 160 g had different fractions of beans (Dolichos lablab) added to their diet in amounts present in 65 g whole bean for up to 6 weeks. Caecal volume was increased by whole bean, free sugars, starch and protein fractions. Whole bean and all its fractions increased weight of faeces. Transit time was reduced by cellulose, free sugar and protein fractions. The physiological effects of reconstituted bean (obtained by mixing isolated fractions) were similar to those of whole bean. Serum cholesterol decreased only in rats given whole beans. Flatus was produced by free sugars, starch and protein fractions but not by the cellulose fraction.
